Mario Arvelo at IFAD

Mario Arvelo congratulates Gilbert Houngbo for his election as President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). This was one of the first congratulatory handshakes that the new IFAD leader received, minutes after his victory in the vote held during the 40th session of the Governing Council, in February 2017. The Dominican support for the Togolese candidature in the second round of voting became crucial for securing Houngbo’s triumph.

The Dominican foreign policy has been able to insert the country in frontline and other prestigious positions at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), whose objective is to eradicate rural poverty. In 2015, during Mario Arvelo‘s leadership of the Dominican Republic’s Permanent Mission, the country was elected —for the first time in history— to a seat in the institution’s Executive Board.
