Mario Arvelo congratulates Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) David Beasley for his election to the post. They have forged close personal and working relationships because of the convergence of their vision and respective responsibilities in the fight against hunger and all forms of malnutrition.

In 2019, the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic acceded to the Executive Board of the World Food Program (WFP) on behalf of Latin America and the Caribbean, with which Mario Arvelo completed the country’s entry into the governing bodies of the three institutions international organizations that fight against hunger and poverty at a global level; the other two are the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The World Food Programme (WFP) is the main humanitarian agency of the international system, operating in 88 countries and providing assistance to 97 million people under the slogan ‘Save lives, change lives’. WFP’s mandate includes contributing to sustainable development, with an emphasis on nutrition for pregnant women and infants, and school feeding, providing food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2020 Peace Prize to WFP “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.

The Peace Prize medal in memory of Alfred Nobel was presented to WFP Executive Director David Beasley on 10 December 2020.
