Mario Arvelo in field visits

Mario Arvelo and other Ambassadors accompany the Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) José Graziano da Silva, the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Gilbert Houngbo, and the Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) David Beasley on a joint visit to rural development projects in Ethiopia in September 2017. The photo was taken in the Hayelom Kebele commune, Tigray province (where a civil conflict would break out in 2020).

Due to his experience in evaluating technical cooperation projects and his capacities for supervision and strategic assessment, as well as for his diplomatic tact, Mario Arvelo participates in inspection visits to evaluate the impact of the work carried out by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Programme (WFP). Field visits in which he has partaken include conflict zones.

Arvelo was appointed as Rapporteur, and therefore was responsible for preparing the inspection report and presenting it to the Fund’s Executive Board.

On that trip, the commission of evaluators met with authorities and beneficiaries in Ghana and Sierra Leone in March and April 2009. The visit included meetings with officials of the FAO decentralized network for the African continent and for West Africa, in Accra. To Arvelo’s left is UK Deputy Representative Victor Heard.
