Ozama

Testimonies From the Ozama reviews and analyzes poetry inspired by the Ozama river, on whose banks the city of Santo Domingo —the first founded by Europeans in the American continent— was built.

Ozama, sad brother
I salute your birth alongside soapy hands
I salute your flow of botanical music
I salute the Caribbean Sea whose mad salt
hands you a poem of wild receding tides
I sing your arrival, singing to the breakwater
until you dissolve among the sour waves.

Juan Sánchez Lamouth,
Romance of the Ozama River
